Dick Diamond’s talk on “Trading for a Living” will include the following topics: Biography: Dick Diamond, who has been trading for a living for over 40 years. Trading OEX options and S & P futures are his sole means of livelihood. Dick received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from the University of Michigan. After active duty in the Marine Corps, he worked as a floor broker on the American Stock Exchange (1960-1965). He left the floor in 1965 to trade for his own account. Dick taught Robert Prechter his option trading methods which Prechter utilized in winning the U.S. Trading Championship in options in 1984. Some years later Prechter convinced Dick to teach others the principles of trading. When Dick agreed to do so, he received an endorsement in Prechter's newsletter and was besieged with calls. Dick's personal trading stopped for a year and a half as he became a teacher. People came to his course from as far away as Alaska, Abu Dhabi, Germany and India. Since that 1.5 year venture into teaching, Dick returned to trading full time but gives a few 4-day seminars in Vero Beach, Florida each year. |

Original Astro Research Project on the Dow Jones Industrial Average Topic: Astro Research Project for the Dow - Backtest of 23 ingress and synodic cycles' effect on 100 years of Dow Data. What cycles did we use? We looked at Helio ingresses and synodics. We are considering looking at more complicated cycles like transiting conjunction “triggers” to midpoints or other geometrical configurations down the road. Why did we choose Helio? Because we are lazy and did not want to have to deal with retrograde motion. No seriously, there is a model that supports our reasoning for Helio, and we may need to add the Geo Moon to it. Why did we choose the Dow? We have a relatively continuous dataset of over 100 years (note this market used to be open 6 days a week and was also closed for a period of time around WWI, etc.) – Daily Open, High, Low, Close from 1/2/1901 to 3/8/2002. Yes, we know that there is 700 years of wheat data out there ;-) Why did we feel that we needed a long dataset? Because it allows for the inclusion of more “statistically significant” cycles. In our case, we defined statistical significance as an event (e.g. the conjunction of Mar and Venus) that occurred more than 40 times over the history of our dataset. That means that the synodic cycle of Jupiter and Saturn got thrown out. Why? Because they only had about 6 conjunctions over the course of the 100 year dataset. Not to worry though, because those planets were included in the synodic cycles where they were paired with faster movers. Why not use a dataset that runs closer to the present time? We wanted to hold a period of time ‘out of sample’ so that we could do a ‘walk-forward’ test from where our data left off. The purpose of such a test is to ensure that the system developed is not curve fitted or optimized to fit the data. So, did we come up with the natal date for the Dow? Natals? We don’t need no stinkin’ natals! Our idea originally was to find hotspots that might coincide with points on the natal chart, but this ended up evolving… Our advice is to refrain from all reading while you are in the midst of a research project. Otherwise it is liable to never get done. We made the mistake of reading Bill Meridians “Forecasting Planetary Economic Cycles” in the midst of ours and it totally changed the way we were thinking about what kind of results we wanted to see. Why didn’t we define swings in the market and just look at what was going on in the sky around highs and lows? I’ll answer that question with a question, “How do you define a swing high or low and in what timeframe? Will the way you define your swing highs and lows in anyway bias what you go looking for in the ephemeris, and what is so great about swing highs and lows?” All we care is whether and what we can predict. We can come up with a trading strategy to take advantage of different market scenarios (bullish, bearish, choppy, etc.) so why limit ourselves only looking to predict swing highs and lows. So, we decided to look at what is happening in the sky and to see if/how it might affect the market. To do this we have to look at one cycle at a time and worry later about how we might put them together in a predictive model. So, our algorithm is to isolate one part of a cycle at a time, for example the synodic cycle between Venus and Mars when it is at conjunction and record how it affected the market. Hmm, how do you record how it affected the market? Originally, what we did was take all of the aspects that traditional astrology says are important and record what happened every time that aspect occurred between two planets to the market 30 days before and after that event.
